Few companies worldwide have invented the product they sell, much less those that bear the name of the inventor: Berkel is among those. For years the young Dutchman Wilhelmus Adrianus Van Berkel tried to combine his butcher and his passion for mechanics. It took months of experiments but eventually his patience was rewarded and after long attempts, he succeeded in putting together two simple but ingenious ideas: a concave blade, able to reproduce the hand movement / knife with precision, and a movable plate capable of sliding towards the blade. Thus he was born the slicer. Van Berkel not, however, possessed the necessary means to switch to the production of its machine. He found, then a print shop that was in disastrous conditions. He introduced himself to the owner and proposed to transform the typography in a laboratory for the manufacture of its slicers. So it was that October 12, 1898, Van Berkel founded the first factory in Rotterdam slicers in the world. Thanks to the innovative spirit of Van Berkel, the first year of operation of the Van Berkel's Patent Company Ltd closed with the delivery of 84 slicers. In 1910, the Van Berkel's Patent Company Ltd. was the first company worldwide to introduce a system of payment by installments, really innovative method for those years. In the difficult period between the two wars to Slicer core business he was added to the production of scales that gave the company a new marketing push. After 1945 Berkel potentiated its distribution and sales network finally conquering the world market arose factories and branches in Italy, England, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, the United States, Canada, Argentina , Mexico. Thus was born the myth.
